Spiral striped material

Howdy Noseman, Hope you're well.
OK, very simply, I want to create a fake steel cable effect - it doesn't have to be perfect, just essentially this striped pattern is fine for what I need.
I have created a simple material, added a checkerboard and adjusted it as you can see in the images. I rotated the texture manually.
My problem is that for some reason, at the far end of the cable, the pattern distorts and does not wrap around uniformly. It looks a little like camera distortion but it is not.
Any ideas.
