Xrefs and Takes possible?

Hi - I have a large product model, which has been set up with 10 colour variations in a master file. I'd like to bring this into various scenes as an Xref and be able to select each colour variation from the takes within that scene - is this possible?

The only way I can work it currently is going back into the master scene, changing the take there, then reloading the xref. This feels clumsy and means I cannot automate the rendering of different takes.

Any help appreciated!
