Parent Null - Automatically change Child Layer to match?
-
Question for the group... I use nulls as folders in the Object Manager and set them up in Layers (i.e. GEO = blue / CAMERAS = red / LIGHTING = yellow / etc.). It would be super useful if objects dragged and dropped in to these folders would automatically take on the Layer of the parent null (folder). Anyone know if there's a way to do this? Perhaps a Python tag script I don't know about?

Hi _carsonjones,
It sounds like saving a right mouse click when moving it to a new "Group". But on the other hand, it might not be that simple.
There is surely a possibility, but I doubt if that makes sense, as that script would need to constantly run and check every single active item after each click if there was a change of its parent. It doesn't sound like something that would improv the overall performance, perhaps the simple click is more effective. Besides, I do not know how that will work if the Take System uses different settings, as one can overwrite the Layer settings. This will be a huge effort to sort this out, especially with XRef in use.
• You can just click on the parent color chip of the Layer and "paint" it down to the new object.
• Right mouse click to apply a new or existing layer.
• SelectSelect as many group members as possible and drag those at once to the Layer you would like to apply to (Select children work great with this).
Other than that, please share your idea here:

Again, I have no idea how that will get synced with the Take System or when XRef is used.
Cheers
