Xpresso within instances
-
Hi. I'm wondering if anyone knows if xpresso can act independently within an instance of an object? I'm assuming not, otherwise I suppose it wouldn't be an instance!
I'm trying to create a rig whereby lights are controlled by a falloff. When the falloff passes over a light, it illuminates. The scene is going to be quite complicated with many many lights as instances. I can only currently get it to work where all the lights illuminate at the same time, instead of independently. Would the only way be for the lights to be all individual objects instead of instances?
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions (or alternatives) I'd really appreciate it.
many thanks,
Terry -
Oh actually, I think I've found a different solution that does what I need! If I place a light in a Fracture Object, I can then instance that as many times as I like and use an Effector with falloff to control the lights illuminating. No xpresso needed. Thanks anyway!

Hi quiet-refuse,
Thanks for the file.
Please have a look below.
The only reason I can think of using Light Instances is to adjust one and have all others in sync. Which can be done with a Selection Object.
The Field Driver allows them to have all the same way; just click on the Section Object's Restore Selection (Attribute Manager), and all objects can be adjusted at once (they need to be the same.)
I assume that the lights can't be set with a Cloner, otherwise, that would be even more simple to do.
All the best

Hi Dr Sassi, thank you for replying
I think the scene you attached was for a different question? Watch spring perhaps?
The reason I was trying to use instances is because I need 100+ objects (different candle variations with area lights above them to light the scene) that I'm manually positioning in the scene, but are 'lit' by a falloff that moves through the scene. The instance element is so I can change the candle geometry so it updates throughout.
Absolutely agree - a cloner is the best solution but I needed to position the candles manually in specific places so was looking for an alternative.
However! I have since figured out a solution to use a cloner instead. Using a polygon object with a number of single vertices (no polygon faces, just unconnected points) I can position my clones exactly where I need to in the scene and then harness the power of fields
Thank you again.

Hi quiet-refuse,
Yes, wrong file; now it is fixed.
Yes, points can be used as a "matrix".
Here is a solution I have used and shared in previous Cineversity Forums. If you see value in it, add it to your library of options.
It allows to position, rotate, and a little bit to scale the Clones individually (Cloner> Object> Enable Scaling)
My best wishes for your project

Oh wow! That's a much better solution! Thank you Dr Sassi - that's a huge help. Being able to access rotation and scale as well as position is extremely useful
Thanks again for your continued help and advice - it's always very much appreciated. -
Thank you very much for your nice reply, quiet-refuse.
My best wishes for your project!
