persistent Team Render freezes 2025.0.2

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with team render with latest C4D 2025.0.2,
I run C4D on my M1 Max machine and have client running on Windows 10 PC. Usually have no issues, but am fighting constant freezes the last few days since updating.
The client seems to freeze after it's "assigned frames", it seems to successfully create and download assets from the source project.
Source machine is rendering to picture viewer, but also isn't starting its assigned rendering. I'm sometimes able to cancel the job from the picture viewer, but other time it will freeze Cinema and I'll have to force quit.
Likewise I can sometimes cancel on the client side, but it is often freezing and have to end that task manually.
I've performed lots of restarts on both sides, tried to clear various caches etc, but to no avail. The logs offer no clues either, doesn't seem to be logging any errors.
One clue i have is that i was able to render a fairly complex scene with standard renderer, but then when i switched to physical renderer that seemed to create the problem. on the other hand i'm able to get simple scenes renderered easily with physical renderer.
Would love any support on this

one additional note is that I've wondered if it's some combination of Hair render + Physical renderer
