    Hi all.

I am new to C4D and taking on what seems to be a daunting task. I seem to be running into a few issues and am hoping that I might get some direction on where I am going wrong.

I am attempting to engrave text from a merged Illustrator file. I pulled the splines out of the Illustrator file and have extruded them separately. Then played both the text extruded splines and extruded mesh into a Boole. There seems to be something working but not all of the splines appear.

    Any help is appreciated.

      Hi bottle-steak,

The 8-sided has two N-Gons; with two cuts, you could have four quads on the front (like a "+" sign). This helps. With that, I get all letters visible. Easier but less clean, set the Boole>High Quality to off)

      Alternatively, I created a pure polygon-based model
I used the splines and created two objects. Then I deleted from each what I didn't need and merged it:

        Hi Dr. Sassi,

Thank you for your help with this.

What is the benefit to cutting the N-Gons into four quads?

In you second example.. just so I follow:

        • You created the 8 sided polygon from a n-Side spline and the text splines, extruded that, then deleted out the inner parts of the text.
        • Then you created the Loft and placed the merged mesh in front of the loft?

        Thank you

          Hi bottle-steak,

N-Gons are great during manual modeling. But for "procedural" modeling like with the Boole, they often give too little information (as in Points), and so the Boole needs to take what points are available. In that way, even that little cut work might solve a lot of less wanted polygons. The worst case is super long polygons; the best is, of course, a perfect flat square. Typically, we avoid the long ones and work to get close to the square. Boole is certainly not my favorite tool, except I can use the Remesh after that if it improves the provided Boole result.

So, to give the Boole a bit more to work with, I took a few seconds to take out the N-Gon.

Switch the following "High Quality" and "Hide New Edges" in various combinations. It might not be a lot of improvement, but it is often enough to get something that works instead of a more problematic result.

I used the sides and the back from the Loft and anything but the sides and back from the Extrude. Then, I merged it and used the Optimize function.

          All the best
