Hi Sassi, I'm trying to record a scene flythough to camera keyframes using a spacemouse. Do you know if there's a way to record camera position on the fly?

I tried Cappacinno but that only seems to work on objects I move with my mouse, and not my camera while Im looking through it.

Also tried playing the timeline with Autokey on but I cant get it to work.

Cheers and have a great weekend!

        Hi MaverickMongoose,

Going by my web search, there is no option.

Since I have no Spacemouse, I can't answer that. Secondhand information is not my thing anyway, to be honest. If I can't reproduce it, my answer might be wrong.

So, why do I answer here then, anyway? Because I dusted off my Contour Shuttle XPress to make a test.

        • I set the joggle dial to dolly the camera., and the Timeline to a slow frame rate.

        • The camera has keyframes on Frame Zero.

        • The Automatic Keying, the red dot below the Timeline with the A in it, is active.

        • The Mouse indicator is in the editor view, and the camera is active.

        • While moving the camera via my shuttle, the Timeline stops. But after a few trials and errors, I get what I want. I guess that interruption (camera adjustment priority over timeline progress is the problem).

Write a suggestion to Maxon, I'm sure the Spacemouse creator will support any effort in that direction, and if I ever get one on my desk, I will support that.

I have tried other ways to move a camera more intuitively, and some apps record the iPhone's motion. Which can then be exported.
Last year we discussed that option in an ATT show; please have a look here:
        https://www.youtube.com/live/7dGAQNjVmDk?feature=share&t=4144
It was an excellent discussion, worth watching.

I bought the app, but some parameters didn't come through; it might be better by now (I had written to the developers of it, but no reply. There are certainly more options now; read through the reviews, preferably the three to five-star ratings, as those artists made it work for them.

My very personal take on this:
Today I would take my Rokoko Mocap Suit and do it that way, pretending my hand is the camera while the other arm intuitively defines the field of view. (Later on, that is a simple XPresso to connect, arm angle equals field of view, I think that makes sense.) This way, I get all axis of motion and feel more in my element, as I have loved camera work since I bought my first Sony video camera in 1987, but that is another story for another day.

Have a great weekend as well! Thank you!

P.S.: I have sent it as a feature request to have that function available.
I hope others will file a "Share Your Idea!" to push it up on the to-do list!

haha, had to Google the Contour Shuttle XPress, looks like a little UFO!

Would love to get my hands on some mocap gear at some point to try that method, will have to settle with keyraming by hand in the meantime I guess.

Thanks for requesting the feature, hopefully Maxon can impliment it soon.

Great video btw, I saw that short film a while back, great to see the behind the scenes!

            Thanks again Sassi!

              You're very welcome, Maverik Mongoose!

I assume that tracking the body will be easier in the future; here is a link from the latest, while not having a big price-point—connection to Cinema 4D in the video.

I thought about something like that but with a few iPhones strapped in the same way as the Sony six items. 😉

Well, much cheaper is the Moves by Maxon iOS app. But I guess it is not built to target the hand that holds a virtual camera.

Yes, the Contour Shuttle has been with me for a long time now (two decades or so). It just keeps working, even though I do not use the options of my Element Tangent Panel. Just to say, I'm not a stranger to input devices.

              Have a great 4th July!
