Assign Random values to Particles
-
Hi, One thing that I would do using Thinking Particles and Xpresso is to give a particle a particle random value. For instance, assign each particle a random height between 800 and 2000 and when the particle reaches that random height, it would spawn new particles.
I have not figured out how to do that with the new particle system. I was able to use a Condition to determine whether the particle is Greater Than the height of 800 and then adjust the Chance to add randomness to that. But it is difficult to specifically dial in a range of values. I will still getting a few going higher than 2000 (I wound up just exploding those when they were past 2000).
Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan,
I'm sure there are many ways to do it, the first one uses the Particle objects in a visual way.
I used a plane and displaced it to a wider range, to place particles on it.
Then the Conditions evaluate those. The key simplification is to use the Particle Multi Group. If you like math, then this might be an option for you:
CV4_2025_drs_24_PArv_01.c4dOr use the Random tab directly
CV4_2025_drs_24_PArv_02.c4dAll the best

Wow, these options are amazing. I greatly appreciate your assistance. I am currently teaching a Simulations course and the new particle system, which is amazing, has me trying to reconfigure how I was doing things before.
You always deliver! I love the solutions for parv_01 and 02. Really opens up more possibilities. Thank you.

Thank you very much, Dan.
I'm glad you enjoy the variety, as I believe everyone has a different background and preference, and so one or the other option might be a better fit. I hope that helps your curriculum keep the load for your students on a good level.
Thank you for all your support for your students; they must be lucky to have you!
My best wishes for your next class
