Opening/importing/translating pre-C4D r19 files?
-
Hi, I have some old pre-C4Dr19 files I would like to open and update. I know they won't open in the r20+ versions of C4D, but does anybody know if there is a service or app that will do this? Even translating them to FBX would be good.

Hi Tanim8r,
There was a plug-in, but it is no longer available. At least I can't find it.
An often repeated suggestion is to keep older computers with their installation from the last use, as this is not only a problem with Cinema 4D, but even specific QuickTime files can be opened.
I keep all laptops as they are for this. The oldest one from 2006 helped me open a Sorenson QT file this year. Please note that the older version might cause trouble with the newer O.SO.S.

It is a long weekend here, and I can't ask anyone.
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-centerHow many files do you have? How old are they?
Please note that any C.O.F.F.E.E. plug-in used in those files will not be converted. Besides, any plug-in that was used needs to be available after that. Of course, that is not the case if FBX is the target. Even older Python might make trouble.
All the best

Unfortunately, the older version I was using was with my old job, so I don't have access to the version or the equipement. I do have a couple of old laptops with older OSs, so if I could get an old copy of C4D I might be able to run it on that. I would have to think that Maxon has copies of the old installers around, and I don't see the harm in them giving a copy to one of their subscribing customers--as it is, I have three versions of C4D on my current machine, what's one more? The files are pretty old--some maybe as old at 2010 or so. I have maybe half a dozen files that I'd really like opened, but there may be more. I will check with tech support and see if they have a suggestion.

Thanks for the reply, Tanim8r,
You should be able to get a URL for this from tech support. Please let me know if there is any problem, and I will check if I can do it for you. I do not offer that directly or easily, as I believe this would create a full-time job 24/7 for me to do that after a while. I hope that is fair.
I hope that you can check on your own directly what is working for you and what is not; as for me (while having time off until next Thursday), I would need to go into each file, understand all the parts, and its outcome to see if the conversion was working. In contrast, I surely have no old plug-ins here, no code conversion options, etc.Cheers
Fingers crossed, you have your files in no time

Thanks! I think just getting an older version of C4D will go a long way to helping me open these. Hopefully tech support can help me out!

You're very welcome, Tanim8r, and thanks for your understanding.
I hope you get the content as you want to add it to the current version.
