Interface Icons Have Moved?
-
I worked up a set of interface icons that restore many icons for things I use all the time, such as "Frame Selected," Navigation modes, etc. They were easily dropped into the appropriate folder from v.2022 on, even in 2024. But I just updated it to 2024.3.2, and, YIKES, that entire folder structure is gone! The familiar icons are still in the interface (What few still exist), but the tif file is nowhere to be found. I searched with every variation of terms I could think of, to no avail. Where'd the icon files go?

Hi VR Theatre,
I hear your Yikes, and it feels familiar to me. I have argued for a long time that changes should only happen when they are urgently required, based on new tools or functions. I think many people have a ringing in their ears from my requests.
Yes, the TIF file has been moved as well, and I have no idea if I will get in trouble for telling you where it is. Typically, if it is not in the manual or website, I start to be careful with what I say here.
Perhaps tech support has an idea of how to answer that. Sorry, but that theme goes too far into the application's gearbox, and I have no idea how it would respond to changes in all the OSs available.
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-centerI will continue to keep things calm in the GUI space, but I'm just one voice in many.
Thanks for sharing your impressions, and keep the tone super civil; that is highly appreciated! Thank you.
All the best

The underlying problem is beyond understanding. Most of these functions have been around for decades and have always had assigned icons. But their icons have been missing for YEARS. This seems basic to having a user-friendly GUI, and everyone has realized this. The fix seems to be very easy. Does Maxon need someone to make new icons? I will volunteer, and I won't charge any more than I think they are worth.

Hi VR Theater,
We must look like a failing circus to you ;-), but thank you for offering help, it is very much appreciated.
Any change of the interface is discussed widely and in detail among departments, and every one of the great and many alfa or beta testers can share input about it. Everything is acknowledged. It is a process Maxon takes seriously.
As usual, there is no one size fits all, and any input on that should be done in the "Share Your Idea" here:
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center
Thanks for taking the time; I would love to see your contribution there: Your voice counts!
This is the place to go and the fastest connection inside of Maxon. This forum is for Q&A, which I have tried to keep on course in a friendly way for nearly 18 years. Do I believe that everything is just perfect? With each update, I think the answer is that things can be improved. It is a clear indicator that no one thinks about freezing the apps' state and going home.
My best wishes.

Has anybody found where the file is? There are still so many missing icons, some of which I had fixed in previous versions, plus lots of other enhancements: eg. different colours between Mograph and other generators.
Any pointers would be great

Hi inspection-net,
Please let Maxon know directly with the "Share Your Idea" option,
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center.I hope others do so, as I understand how to arrange things for the best individual workflow.
My best wishes

Hi friends,
In the meantime, how are command icons change? I have a lineup of cog icons and have to hover over each to see what they do. I search around in the command manager to no avail.
Thank you,
-C -
Hi Chum,
Those are all app-specific, and there is very little that I can solve here.
I'm sure the icon designer is aware of this, but do you have a few specific icons that are not out of the "Cogwheel State"?
I'm happy to collect all of them and forward them so that they might get prioritized. But no promises…
Thanks for considering.

SOLVED: OK, Maxon's help was happy to explain.
All the interface icon stuff is still there. It is in a zip file located in the main folder. I think it is Resource.zip? Just unzip the folder, change out the icons and index files, then zip it again. That's it. (probably wise to copy the zip file before tinkering.)I can't upload a large file here, so you can see my icons and index at:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/191FMu7ZrjcgDOlhVcrEBq7RhbROMB8Io?usp=sharing
It's not extensive, I just restored the icons for the functions I most use. Frame selected object, Frame All, Cursor mode, Camera mode, etc, Toggle visible only, whatever. -
Hi VR Theatre,
Thanks for the update. It's nice that it works for you.
In the past, I sometimes had trouble with specific zip versions, hence my hesitation in suggesting this here.
Fingers crossed, you can reuse it in the future.
Cheers

@VR-Theatre Hey, did that work for you in 2024.4? My cinema keeps crashing when I use your files. Did you zip it in a specific way?
EDIT: Okay, the trick is to open the ZIP with Winrar and paste the new files into it, without extracting and zipping again

Hi there,
Since this theme has very mixed results, please check with tech support.
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-centerAlso, please be careful with any non-Maxon link shared here. We can't constantly check them, and the content might change without notice.
We can't guarantee the quality of any of those. All the best

Yep, between the last version and 24.4, the icon index has changed. Oh, fer the luv of ... Worked great a week ago. Now some of my most used functions aren't even listed. I will have to go back and see what might be done.

Hi, VR Theatre,
Please use the "Share Your Idea!" I have tested it and got no usable advice from that experience. The best place is to make suggestions to Maxon directly:
https://www.maxon.net/en/support-center
and request an easy-to-change icon option. My suggestion would be to have an extra image file (a copy of the original icon "sheet") with the same number of spaces for images and an option per right mouse click to choose the default of an alternative icon. The alternative icon can be freely changed and easily added to new installations. It should have a fixed place from now on.
If the settings can't be stored in the preferences, then a text file should be used to store them so that they can also be easily changed.Perhaps you have a different idea but use the link. I think we have by now established that there is no 100% predictable results right now. But if no one writes to Maxon, I see little chance for a change.
I will do my best to support this internally.
All the best, and thanks for considering it.
P.S.: I submitted this as suggestion, but it needs more voices!

Thanks. Maxon support got back to me and helped solve the problem. I will try "Share Your Idea" and ask if the situation can't be made more transparent.

Hi, VR Theatre,
Thank you very much.
Yes, please do so!
I suggested a second Icon image to use with an easy access (a copy of the original that can be altered. With a right mouse click on the icon in question, the artist/user can choose between default or the individually created version per icon, so it is easy customize. Any update on the default doesn't "kill" the alternative version. (I avoid asking to have the alternative taken over completely, as that would not fly well with needed updates.
I'm curious about your idea; please submit it. Thanks for your effort.Cheers
