      Hello Everyone.

I am trying to put a texture onto a feather (Hair Object) rendering with redshift. Although this seems like a simple task I am running into issues.

First I tried the standard way of doing this inside of the layer shader ![as noted in the maxon documentation.

This worked in physical render but not in RS.

I rebuilt the texture inside the RS node editor but the Hair UV's (set to feather) in the feather hair material tag are still only on the hairs and not across the surface of the feather.

I later found out this was a technical issue with c4d (link below):

Since this seems to be a known issue I am trying a workaround with a TriPlanar node to place the texture onto the feather.

This was successful to get the texture onto the feather however when I move the feather objects position the texture does not stay on the object. I have the TriPlanar Projection space set to Object ( I have also tried reference ) still no luck getting the texture to move with the object.

      Questions:

      • I am assuming the UV Feather selection with RS is not fixed (support ticket Ticket ID##605775 created 2 years ago ). Does anyone have different information or findings on this?

      • Does anyone have any thoughts on why the TriPlanar texture will not stick to the feather object? Is there something in the Hair attributes node editor that could help?

      • Is there a better way of doing this that I am missing? I would like to keep the feather object procedural and avoid baking it but I am open to anything at this point.

      Thank you kindly

        Hi assignment-brave,

I can offer only a workaround, but please feel free to ask tech support about earlier tickets.

        • Set up the Feather as needed but with a straight Spline, and adjust the thickness of the hair material.
        .
        • Create a copy, and while that copy is active, press the c key
        .
        • In the new Hair Object, set the Generate to Circle or Square.
        .
        • With the hair Object active, press the C Key.
        .
        • Place a material to the Hair polygon object (delete the origial one.
        .
        • Set the Material to flat and in texture Mode, align the "frame" to the object, typically that needs a 90º rotation, and in the Object Manager> Tags> Fit to Object (Alert shows up: Include all…)
        .
        • With that object active, object manager>Tags> Generate UVW coordinates.
        .
        • This provides you now with a stable UV information/setup
        .
        • To animate the Feather, a Spline Wrap is used, keep length is a good fit. I avoid using the full spline, as the endpoints are not well defined (Start/From)
        .
        • Use a Spline as the main and another (in distance) as the Rail.
        .
I hope all other information is in the file; add your texture to it.

If UV is not wanted, with enough points in the Polygon results a Vertex map worked with the Spline Wrap.

As a side note, the TriPlanar is a good idea in a few cases; anything animated might not; it is, at best, a case-by-case decision.

Files: For security reasons, only Dropbox, Google, Wetransfer, Adobe, or Apple cloud services are accepted, all during uploaded with no compression and the link (as you did) pasted clearly, thanks for not shortening the URL. Sorry for the extra work. (I do not experiment with other cloud services to receive data here; we keep those out of the forum for security reasons, even if others have no concerns).

        Have a great weekend.

P.S.: I checked the ticket number; as S. mentioned, the ticket was closed while forwarded to the development team. As stated, closing doesn't mean solving.

More was not possible for the tech support to do.
