Dumb C4D Update Question
-
I apologize, if this subject is already clearly covered.
I'm rather new to the current operations of Maxon One.
Previously, with the perpetual versions (my last being R19) I would simply follow the in-app prompts for updates. Easy.
But I'm not clear what the best route is, with the Maxon One app:First, It's currently telling me there is an update to Cinema 4D 2023.2.0
However, I'm seemingly already running 2023.2.0Secondly, in the case of Redshift, I was instructed my the Maxon RS forum moderators, to NOT update via the Maxon One app, but instead download the current RS build, and install that way.
So, what is the best practice for staying current with C4D?
Thank you!

Hi entry-newspaper,
Since you put it into the headline:
There are no dumb questions.
I try to handle every question the same way, if a young kid starts or a film studio boss asks. I do not make a difference. Each question is equally essential for the one who asks and for me.
Dumb questions are the ones that were never asked. Both ways are correct.
Manual downloads are the way to go for several reasons, for example, when one has an unstable web connection. Then you can ensure the manual download is securely on your drive and go from there.
(Thanks to Saul for sharing that with me.)On the other hand, the Maxon-One app is supposed to streamline the whole process and is designed to work most simply while giving you control over when to update.
All the best

Thanks, Dr. Sassi.
I just downloaded the 2023.2.2 Offline Installer (so that answers my first question, regarding the version).
However, before I proceed, I'm still trying to understand whether this will install a whole new version of Cinema? Or will this installer simply updated my existing version of 2023.2.0 - along with all of my prefs, plugs, etc. Thanks!

As I have mentioned often, if I have not done it with the exact configuration and version, I do not answer. What has worked in the past is perhaps different today. So, answering from memory is not a sure thing. I avoid this. If I do, I use the word "brainstorming".
So, even downloading from the Maxon website and installing it required me to deinstall my 2023.2.2. version, which I got from the server that we internally use. So, cleaning that up to get closer to what I assume is your current setup. That is the first difference. But I hope I got everything deleted.
This may sound like a simple question, but it has some complexity.
I'm unclear about your setup and whether you require a particular OS.What I'm sure about is that the manual installation here sets up a new folder. Besides that, the preference folder has everything as factory default.
Open the previously installed version from the 2023 release. The Preference folder should hold all your preferences and settings, which should be able to be used to replace the factory default.Where I get uncertain is the theme of anything previously set up individually, like local variables and patterns, including the Net Work-rendering.
The entries needed on your side of Plugins and Asset Browser Folders are beyond me; I have too little information. But reconnecting the folder containing all plugins should be a short setup. All of that, of course, among the 2023 versions; since you mentioned R19, there is no copy and paste to my knowledge to 2023.
I assume that was not mentioned in the tip to use the manual setup a route, but I understand pushing a button with little information about what will happen puts some uncertainty on one's mind. I will check if we can provide some more information here.
Any technical problems are not supposed to be solved here, as the information flow and the options over at tech support are much better. Here at University, I focus on creative problem-solving and providing an understanding of how things work. This is often overlapping. Not fun for anyone with a problem, but I hope I am careful enough to recreate the "case" at hand as much as possible.
I hope I covered most of it. For more technical questions, please check with the tech support:

Dr. Sassi,
Thank you for the detailed, and thoughtful response. I'll follow-up with Maxon Support, for more granular technical help, with the upgrade process.
Cheers!

You're very welcome, entry-newspaper,
I hope that everything moves flawlessly.
When I update from Adobe, I like not to have my settings inherited. Why? Because after a while, I have forgotten it. On the other side, I install many versions here constantly and setting up everything each time can get old, but in the end, for my doing, I have to stay close to the factory default anyway.
In other words, I understand your target and know I should be a one-line answer to it, but I'm careful, based on experience.
I have a little laptop here for all experiments, where it doesn't matter when I mess things up; that helps me a lot to explore.
Back when I was part of a 3D network, I stayed in standard mode all the time, as jumping in to support people close to a deadline wouldn't be possible if I had to change someone's set-up in their studio.
Have a great weekend.
