Model a repeated pattern in a shape and scale pattern with individual elements accordingly

Hi,
I'm having difficulties with modeling a pattern in a shape and controlling the scaling of the different elements of this pattern.
This is the pattern I would like to repeat inside of a shape:

Since the shape narrows down towards the sides the pattern doesn't fit.
You can see that the spheres of the pattern intersect there where the pattern gets too narrow. I would like scale down the spheres where necessary, preferably in steps so just a few sizes of spheres are necessary to build this shape.
I've tried many things but until now unsuccessful. The shape I show here is build using an underlaying surface (hidden) that is deformed with an FFD deformer and where the spheres are distributed across using a cloner object. This way the spheres themselves do not deform. I thought of using a step effector on the cloner objects but until now is does not give me the wanted result/control I am looking for. Also the FFD deformer is not ideal, since the repeated pattern's shape gets distorted. I would like to scale it as uniformly as possible.
Can you help me in finding a better modelling method?

I think there is no solution to placing the patterns on an organically deformed object while keeping the pattern and scaling each sphere so that it stays a sphere and doesn't turn into an egg.
These Spheres have two or four neighbors. While the "matrix-object" deformation is not linear, the object's scale might fit to one neighbor but not to the next of a group of neighbors. This would require a move of position based on the neighbor's scale and all of them, which would ripple back and forth.
Below are four files showing the problem when Scale in the Cloner's Object Tab is enabled (…MGpr_01.c4d) or three brainstorming files for exploration. The Tension Tag might lead to baked Texture/clip, but I'm pretty sure that kind of per-object scale will not happen.

It is quite an exciting challenge, and I'm sure some genius plug-in developer might figure something out for those special cases.
I will try to write a request that expresses this need.
