Asset Browser Animated Image Sequence
-
Hi there, I'm trying to save an animated jpg sequence to the Asset Browser (its an animated palm tree Silhouette that I use all the time as a gobo).
I've tried adding the sequence to a Redshift material and as a shader node connected to a Redshift Spotlight, but when I add the individual elements to the asset browser it only keeps the first frame of the sequence.
I also tried adding the whole project and tex folder with the sequence inside but it doesnt work correctly when I try to add it to another scene.
Is it even possible to add an image sequence to the asset browser?
If not, do you think I could add a video sequence instead? As far as I can tell though redshift will only work with an animated image sequence and not a video file, is that right?
Cheers

Hi MavrickMongoose,
What is the Texture-node telling you when you create the project with the sequence? Here I have the Animate tab in mind. When you click on the General> Animation> Detect Frames button. Save your project with Assets. Then check the tex folder to see if it has everything you need. If not, place it there. That folder is then ready for broader use.
I would typically avoid any movie files as texture, as they are often compressed in a complex way, meaning the app has to load the whole movie or at least a more extended sequence to get all the data, which might stress the system with no benefits.
Movies come in all flavors regarding gamma and color spaces or channel setups, like +YUV instead of RGB. Some formats limit even the small 8bit/channel space by being broadcast safe. Who knows how things were set up by someone else? But that is a different story for another day.All the best

P.S.:
I have tested a few scenarios.
The safest way (IMHO) to create a simple but stable solution is to load the image sequence to a specific folder in the Asset browser. So you can load the material of your choice from the Asset Browser. Which prevents the file path problems.
The Project file or material that you save then to the Asset Browser has that image sequence avaialble.
This means you can also create quick variations of that material or scene.
Alternatively, Watchfolders are a way to go, perhaps.

Thanks Sassi,
I've given that a try too but no matter what the image sequence wont load from a database, the only option seems to be packaging up the whole scene file and just sharing that seperatley.
I contacted Maxon directly in the end and they said its not currently possible to add image sequences to the asset browser allthough they may add this feature later on. They also said video formats will not work with Redshift at all.
So I guess I'll just wait and see. Thanks for trying though!

Hi MaverickMongoose,
I have done it here. It worked. I will try again to see how it can fail. I will also try on a different computer, perhaps that sequence was already somewhere else stored. I will try with a newly created one.
Have you tried to load the sequence into a watch folder?
Cheers

Yeah I thought I had it too, but when I moved it to another computer the sequence didnt link up.
I thought the watch folders only work locally and seperately from a database? I cant send a watch folder to another computer can I?
Basically Im trying to package all my animated textures up so I can share them through a single asset browser database.

I understand now, MaverickMongoose,
I don't think so; the path would not be the same. I re-read the initial post, just in case I missed something.
Projects transferred need to be saved with Assets.
You did not mention that you like having it on multiple machines as copied data.
Data that is just copied will lead, at one point, to a disaster. Just wait for it. One sequence was color space converted on one machine, not labeled.
Now during a deadline, this was forgotten. The deadline might be missed: The client lost.Central data storage is needed, and I can't support that here, as it is way out of the scope of this forum, but I know someone will tell me to use Dropbox.
Two things why I don't participate in such things.
Constant access open in the internet to your production machine is kind of a risk. Production machines in high-end facilities are more often than not disconnected from any web-based sources. Guess why.At one point, they are easier to hack, and you get shut down with any internet hick-up.
This question is more for hard-core IT people who know all the details about connecting different machines and can establish security protocols.
Good Luck.
