I wonder if somebody could help me please. I’ve recently bought Cinema 4D (after years of using Maya) but I now need to get all of my models into C4D and am having some problems.

I tried exporting them as .fbx but when I add a texture the models end up with completely messed up geometry, there’s triangles jutting all over the place that cast odd shadows on the models. I also tried .obj but then the entire scene is just one object. I also tried .abc for animated scenes but some of the models appear to have a speckled appearance to them that wasn’t there before. If I view the model in the viewport it all appears to be okay.

Also if I apply a texture to one part of an imported model it applies it to the entire model because it sees it as one object, how can I get it to see each element of a model separately?

Also none of the imported models will render in Red Shift.

Please can somebody help with this as I’ve got hundreds (if not thousands) of Maya models that I need to get into C4D.

      Thank you

        Hi pierce-capital,

The Connection to other DCC apps is important to us.

Sorry for the delay; I had a week off and checked only the Q&A and Help Forum. Admins typically ignore Q&A questions posted here, as those questions are misplaced.

This is the site issue forum, and I can't find an entry you have problems signing in.

Since you recently bought Cinema 4D, enabling access should be no problem. Please open a new post with your access problem.

My tip: can you reimport the FBX to Maya to see what it has produced? Since Autodesk bought FilmBox ages ago, they have a proper working roundtrip. Hopefully, the result will allow us to solve this in case something has changed.

Some people have good results with the DAE_FBX format, which (AFAIK) has a triangulated check box.

Have you tried to use the Mesh> Cut> Untriangulate?

The round trip in Cinema 4D 2024 works fine; no new triangles exist. Yes, I test constantly, as answering from memory is typically not up-to-date; things can change quickly.

Thank you for your reply. I did try triangulating the model but nothing happened at all.

I also couldn't see a triangulated check box (although I'm using Maya 2016)

            Hi piece-capital,

Did you mean un-triangulate, as triangulate would do nothing to an already triangulated object?

I need to see a small file. I have no idea what Maya 2016 had as an export option.

Sorry yes, I meant un-triangulate, it must have auto-corrected it.

When you say you need a file do you mean a screenshot of the settings in Maya or an exported fbx file?

                Hi piece-capital,

                Thanks for asking!

I need an example file that you want to import.
Images or screen capture have very little information.
A file works, or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it's time to figure out why. I'm happy to look into it.
