I don't feel like your questions have anything in it that would make me feel that way.

The simplest way to understand the Formula effector is to put just a number into the formula field. When you use a 1.0, all parameters and results of the effector will have 100% (if not limited by other sliders in the Cloner, for example, or Fields). So, if you place a 0.5, you get half of the values. Even the gray value (Cloner Color -Transform- set to black)

Each Clone typically has an ID. Which are integer numbers, like 1 or 6 [not 1.3 or 6.1]. You wanted to have four clones, so I used the Modulo to divide it by four, which gives me the remainder. As a result, you get four gray values.

These four gray values are fed then into the Colorizer or Ramp to translate them to Color.

That would give you a static result. So I use the f -slider, and since that is a Real number (6.1, for example) and animation would not blend from one color to the next, hens the Formula, which cuts the .1 from 6.1 (for example) away. This means it adds only full integer numbers, creating a running light.

The gray values are not easy to predict for the editor and rendering simultaneously, as we have gamma and linear values in the game; hence, I suggest rendering to see what happens. To have linear values in the display is not easy to work with. So we have to deal with both

This is exactly how it is set up. See image.

It is based on the Vertex Map Tag. This Tag, while named wisely, is inside of the Vertex Attribute.
The Freeze layer stores the data.

If you need additional colors from Splines that hit later, use another Vertex map Tag, drive the next mask with it, and adjust the color of that layer.

From my exploration, I conclude that this is not possible. It doesn't appear anywhere, even if you select the Vertex map during Export. From my point of view, it would kind of defeat the idea of a proxy.

But perhaps check with the support, just in case I don't know the secret handshake.

When you look at the reveal tutorial at 02:39, you will see that the selection is lost when the plane moves down. That is precisely what we have as a problem above. The Freeze takes care of that in the same way I have described it above.
While set to grow, it needs a starting point: the Sphere Field in this example.

What a bug or a feature is, I leave that to the developers and support. But let's say it works now as it should. 😉

I understand your concern, given that a larger part of our knowledge is now used to identify useable from sloppy information while searching for proper sources; let me say this: Typically, Noseman put's a lot of effort into it. We are in a team and exchange knowledge, and after that, we also have a QA in place. But things constantly change, and then something like the discussion above is needed. Hence why we connect tutorials with a forum thread so we can answer quickly.

In the Q&A forum, you will see me ~99.5% of the time answering only if I have a project file or if I was able to reproduce it. Answering from memory is, from my point of view, sloppy and blurry. It might be right, but is it working with the current release? It always needs a practical check.
